The Best Yuri Anime You Should Watch!

Published in News on 01-08-2020

Yuri anime, be it fluff balls of cuteness making you feel all happy all over or, drama filled struggles Yuri anime can pull both sides of emotions. Yuri anime for those of you not knowing is typically a romance anime featuring lesbian relationships. The relationship may not be the main focus as “yuri” is typically a sub genre and not so main as say, action or horror. Some of the anime listed here whilst being considered the best of the yuri genre they, at times don’t even get listed in tags as being a yuri anime. Now for those of you interested in yaoi anime, I will also be adding a list for them as well so never fear! (Yaoi being a sub genre depicting relationships of two males.) So with all of this out the way let’s get to this list so you can find out the yuri anime you’ve been missing out on!

The first and generally considered the best (based on a general consensus, cause that’s how we do things here, personal opinions be damned!) Yuri Kuma Arashi. Now it’s not considered one of the best because it boast the best story or animation, no. It’s considered the best due to its more relatable characters because this series actually deals with homophobia which is common in the real world. The main characters have to keep their relationship a secret from the world as.. the world isn’t a forgiving place. However if you’re thinking this is a serious anime you’re mistaken. This series uses a unique way of telling a story and therefore can be difficult to understand. This anime series uses a surrealism art form to tell a story through cringy dialog like saying, “Gao Gao”, “Shabadadoo” and “Deliciousmell. Besides this, there’s strange scenes that make no real sense if you look at it like a normal anime series. While watching Yuri Kuma Arashi you will need an open mind and to look at it in a different perspective to truly enjoy the messages found within this series. Yuri Kuma Arashi or its English translation: Lesbian Bear Storm is the best Yuri anime and the worst depending on what you take from the experience. There’s a lot of metaphors, hidden messages and visual depictions that’re left to your imagination to determine exactly what is happening.

Next on our list is Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica or its English name of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. This is a “magical girl” series and I will for warn before I go ahead with this anime.. it’s got a gratuitous amount of gore and therefore if you’re not interested in any blood-baths, gore, violence or fantastically animated action scenes you may want to skip this one. Now that’s been said and done Puella Magi Madoka Magica is not your typical magical girl series, it’s not for children it meant for adults as the story can get confusing, however I cant go into much detail without spoiling things. The Yuri theme in this series is not the focus however if you watch the series and the movies it’ll become more and more clear. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a fantastic series if you’re looking for something that actually makes you question whats going on, it has a lot of psychological themes in place and it has a deep story to follow along.. just don’t fall for all the bright colors and cute characters this is a dark story to follow along but well worth it. Plus the main characters are adorably cute together!

Strawberry Panic.. a much calmer and more normal yuri anime than some of the other series on this list. This is a proper romance anime set with a school theme depicting two teenagers in love or are they? Aoi Nagisa transfers to a all-girl Catholic schools on Astraea Hill. Aoi Nagisa, being the new girl she has some trouble fitting in especially due to her shy nature, she however meets Hanazono Shizuma a popular and mysterious girl at the school who seems to be very interested in Aoi Nagisa for some reason. The story of Strawberry Panic features many characters other than the main, Aoi Nagisa and Hanazono Shizuma as we learn more about the side characters their romantic problems and the drama that follows along with it. Strawberry Panic is considered the gate-way anime to the yuri genre, it’s lighthearted, artistically beautiful, enjoying and interesting. There’s not a whole lot of harsh themes to rub people the wrong way therefore it’s the perfect series to watch if this is your first yuri anime!

Here we have Kannazuki no Miko or in English Destiny of the Shrine Maiden, this is yet another “gate-way” yuri anime. Kannazuki no Miko features the story of Chikane Himemiya and Himeko Kurusugawa two school students who are seemingly unaware of who they really are and without reason feel drawn together despite the fact Chikane currently likes a boy. They are in fact gifted or cursed with the destiny of being the shrine maidens of the sun and moon reincarnated since eternity tasked with defending the world from the evil that inhabits it, called Orochi. Within the series these lovers have to struggle with their feelings, their destiny and the world’s fate if they fail to embrace their destiny. Kannazuki no Miko is a beautiful series about being reborn and still finding ones love for eternity. Kannazuki no Miko blends romance, mecha fighting, drama in an interesting way and it’s a great anime to watch.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha is the next yuri anime on our list. This anime like with Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) is a series that whilst having yuri within it, isn’t it’s main focus. Both Nanoha and Fate Testarossa are actually enemies at their meeting, however over many series these girls struggle with their feelings towards each other. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha is a series you can watch if you’re interested in romance or not, as these girls and their relationship is a slow burn and it’s an amazing journey to watch them grow up from young children to adults. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha is rather normal magical girl series, Nanoha has to find the Jewel Seeds that have been scattered throughout Earth and it is here that starts a journey you wont forget. This is definitely a must watch yuri anime as their relationship is more flushed out than a lot of other series due to it spanning years, and multiple series.

So this is basically the best yuri anime has to offer, there are more that I might list in my next top 10 yuri anime list but for now these are the “must” watch series that are generally recommended. I hope you enjoy watching them!

All done!
